0. Do any embroidery or applique first.
1. Sandwich lining, interfacing, and exterior circles wst. Pin and topstitch around edge.
2. Sandwich exterior and interfacing of gusset wst. Topstitch down both long edges.
3. Cut a zipper-length piece of both exterior and interior gusset .
4. Cut these short gusset pieces in half lengthways.
5. Lay one zipper lining piece rsu. Line up top of zipper rsu with the top edge of the lining. Lay stitched edge of exterior along top edge wsu. Stitch along top edge.
6. Fold exterior and lining back from zipper. Topstitch.
7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 for other side of zipper.
8. Cut remaining gusset pieces (lining and exterior) in half widthwise.
9. Sandwich zipper piece rsu between one piece of gusset lining rsu and one piece of gusset exterior wsu. Stitch across at end of zipper.
10. Trim zipper ends.
11. Fold back lining and exterior from zipper piece. Topstitch.
12. Repeat 9, 10, and 11 for other side of gusset.
13. Stitch down both long edges of gusset.
14. Fold strap piece in half lengthways rst. Stitch down edge.
15. Turn strap right side out and topstitch down both long edges.
16. Cut a piece 126 cm long from the strap piece.
17. Position rectangle ring 3 cm from cut edge on strap. Fold up short edge 1 cm, then fold up again around ring. Stitch.
18. Repeat step 17 on other end of strap.
19. Cut two 5 cm pieces from remaining strap piece.
20. Place one through ring on end of strap. Fold at 2 cm, and fold again so last 1 cm covers cut edge. Repeat on other end of strap.
21. Fold gusset in half, so seams at each end of zipper match up. Determine center of zipper and mark with a pin.
22. Fold one of the circle pieces into quarters, and mark each 'corner.'
23. Line up pin marking zipper center with one of the pins on the circle. Pin gusset to circle until you reach the next pin, 1/4 of the way around the circle. This determines where the straps should be sewn. Mine were 15 cm from center on each side.
24. Pin strap to gusset and stitch on. **Next time, add straps slightly above horizontal centerline to add stability to the purse.
25. Pin gusset to circle in preparation for sewing. Determine where bottom of gusset overlaps, and stitch. **This can be done either rst or wst, depending on where you want the bias trim (inside or outside, respectively). If you choose rst, open zipper first to allow for turning.
26. I added another small piece of lining to cover the bottom gusset seam inside the purse. Topstitch in place.
27. Finish pinning gusset to circle. Stitch.
28. Snip any thread ends and do any other cleanup from the lining side of the half-purse.
29. Pin other circle to other side of gusset. Stitch.
30. Trim the seams if needed.
31. Add bias tape over seams. Turn if needed.
32. Add zipper pull if desired.
Notes for next time: Stitch bias tape with satin foot; don't try to use the adjustable bias foot. Attach straps slightly above horizontal center line.
